World Cup 2026: The XXL Revolution of North American Soccer

After the memorable edition in Qatar, the football world is looking toward the 2026 horizon. For the first time in its history, the FIFA World Cup is reaching a monumental milestone in terms of format, geography, and spectacle. Here is everything you need to know about this global event.

1. An Unprecedented Format: Expanding to 48 Teams

This is the major change for the 23rd edition. The classic 32-nation format is gone; the competition will now welcome 48 teams.

  • 104 matches (instead of 64) spread over 39 days of competition.

  • 12 groups of 4 teams: The top two from each group, along with the 8 best third-placed teams, will qualify for an additional round.

  • The introduction of the Round of 32: A new knockout stage that promises even more suspense.

2. Three Countries, Sixteen Cities, One Continent

For the first time, the tournament will be co-hosted by three nations: Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Matches will take place in 16 host cities, divided into three geographical zones (West, Central, East) to minimize travel.

3. Key Dates and Symbolic Venues

The official schedule has already been revealed, placing North America at the center of the world during the summer of 2026.

  • Kick-off: June 11, 2026, at the legendary Azteca Stadium (Mexico City).

  • Final: July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium (New York/New Jersey).
